By undertaking Professional Registration, you already show a commitment to improving your professional knowledge. One way to demonstrate this commitment on an ongoing basis is through the revalidation of your CILIP Certification, Chartership or Fellowship and ensure you get the professional recognition for keeping your skills up-to-date and staying in touch with the latest developments in the profession. Revalidation is free of charge.
How to revalidate
To revalidate, access your space in the CILIP Portfolio section of the VLE and start logging any CPD activities that you’ve undertaken in the last year. You can access the CILIP VLE from this web site by logging in with your usual user name and password - the VLE tab will appear as an option.
Members should think broadly when considering what activities to include in their revalidation. Reading a professional publication, talking about professional issues with a colleague or engaging on social media are all valid CPD activities - as well as attending a formal training course or a conference.
Once you’ve completed a minimum of 20 hours of CPD, submit this with a 250 word (maximum) reflective statement focusing on how you have developed your knowledge over the year. All CILIP members already complete more than 20 hours of CPD in a year, so by revalidating, you will get professional recognition for doing so!
There is a helpful video on the VLE on how to prepare and submit your revalidation log and reflective statement.
There is no charge for revalidation.
Revalidation to remain voluntary for the profession
Following consultation with members, the CILIP Board has decided that an Obligatory Revalidation scheme will not be introduced at present. We will continue to focus on the other key elements of our action plan to engage with employers to strengthen the status of the profession and members
Frequently asked questions
We’ve gathered the most common questions about revalidation below:
“Will I lose my post-nominals if I can’t revalidate?”
No, members will not lose their post-nominals or member status if they remain in membership and do not revalidate: however you will not have your entry on the Register of Practitioners updated if you do not revalidate.
“I can’t do 20 hours of CPD a year”
You already do it. CPD includes everyday activities such as reading about professional issues, attending meetings, and participating in social media and informal discussions - as well as conferences and training.
“I can’t afford the training/CPD?”
CPD activities needn’t cost you anything more than your time. As part of your membership benefits you already have access to CPD such as the CILIP Update magazine and e-learning modules on the VLE
“I’m retired, do I have to revalidate?”
No, retired members are exempt from having to revalidate. However, if you are retired and would like to revalidate then you would be very welcome to do so.
